Women's Groups

The RJC currently hosts two women's groups: Sisterhood and a Rosh Hodesh group.

The Rutland Jewish Center Sisterhood is a community association of women from the Rutland region. Active for more than 50 years, Sisterhood's mission is to:

  • Encourage the customs and traditions of Judaism
  • Encourage and support the religious school
  • Provide scholarships when appropriate
  • Encourage and support community service, and
  • Support the Constitution and Bylaws of the Rutland Jewish Center

Through the years, RJC Sisterhood has provided assistance to community projects including the Red Cross blood drives, the Well Baby Clinic in Rutland, the Rutland Women's Shelter, the hospital Book Wagon, and the local Community Cupboard food shelf. We sponsor the Kay Berger Award, given to a Rutland High School graduating senior. We encourage participation in the Rosh Hodesh group.

Membership in the RJC Sisterhood is open to members of the Rutland Jewish Center as well as nonaffiliated Jewish women in the area.

The RJC Rosh Hodesh group

Rosh Hodesh
is a celebration of the new moon. It is a women's holiday, with its origins in the time of the Golden Calf. When the women did not give their gold jewelry for the statue they were rewarded with a special holiday at the time of the new moon. The RJC Rosh Hodesh group celebrates it by recognizing special features or women associated with the new month.

Each month, different members of the group prepare the service and its special features. We light candles, say kiddush and prayers for healing for family and friends and then participate in the special program. The Rosh Hodesh group meets in homes. Knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary. Light refreshments are served. All women are invited to come.

To find out when the next meeting of the Rosh Hodesh group will take place, check the Announcements, Calendar, or call the RJC Office.

If you would like more information about Sisterhood or the Rosh Hodesh group, please email or call the RJC Office at (802) 773-3455.
