Hebrew - Rabbi Weber

On Tuesday, June 5 we began work on Chapter 6, Ahavah Rabah. We also started discussing the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Handbook and the concept of mitzvot.

Please practice reading the eight words at the bottom of page 54.

Also practice reading lines 9-12 on page 57 (which feature these words.)

Look again at the bottom of page 54. The authors of this book have arranged a hierarchy. That is, they claim that "to practice" for instance is at a higher level than "to teach."

Some people say, "I only will do a certain prayer or ritual if I completely understand it first." How does this ladder of values (or hierarchy) contradict that statement? Write a brief answer.

Rehearse your part for the service on Friday night. If you need help, I am available on Wed. afternoon, and Thursday afternoon until 5:15.

Wednesday night at 7:30 PM is our Education Committee meeting. It is your opportunity to have imput about next year.

See you on Friday, 6:00 PM. (Yes, I am aware of one student who can't be present.)

Also Wed., is one of our early morning (7:00 AM) minyanim if you care to join us.

This week we made up a bit for last week. We finished reading Chapter 6 in the textbook and started Chapter 7. I would like you to finish 7 on your own and prepare for a final test on Tuesday. It will cover only the material in Chapters 6 & 7 and the discussions about that information. Nothing will be from class discussions of Babaganewz articles or from our session with Mrs. Salander.

Some points to review while studying for the test:

Chapter 6:

What was the Union of Orthodox Rabbis and when was it formed?

Who was Solomon Schechter and why is he important?

Who was Cyrus Adler and why is he important?

What was the fight for Jewish rights about?

What was/is the Protocols of the Elders of Zion?

What is the American Jewish Committee?

What is Kehillah?

What is the "Joint"?

How many levels of Tzedakah are there and who classified them?

Who is Judith Kaplan and what did she do?
 
Chapter 7:

What is a sweatshop?

Why is the Jewish Daily Forward important?

What is Samuel Gompers known for doing?

What was the name of a Jewish union?

What was the Uprising of the Twenty Thousand?

Name three labor leaders.

What happened at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company?

Why is Rabbi Stephen Wise important?

Hope that this gives you a good jumping off point for your exam preparation. I know that you both will do just fine.
