Hebrew - Rabbi Weber

This past Tuesday we had a test on Chapter 5. I have corrected all the papers and sent them to you via snail mail today.

Also in that snail mail are, among other items, reminders of:

1. There are only 2 sessions left of Tuesday school.
2. Meeting next Wed. night at 7:30 PM to discuss plans for next year.
3. 6 PM Hebrew School service and pot-luck dinner next week. Everyone has been assigned a short part, which is enclosed in the snail mail. We will practice a bit this coming Tuesday.

PLEASE NOTE: Junior Congregation this week had to be cancelled as Jessica is not available. The one remaining, final session is Sat. June 16

For homework:

1. Practice your part for the service.

2. Learn the six vocabulary words on page 53 of the text book. There maybe a quiz on these six words.

3. Do pps. 33 and 34 of the workbook.

Shabbat Shalom

History/Bible - Nancy Garfinkel

Today we covered quite a bit of ground. We reviewed the homework assignment from last week, which was more extensive than usual. The homework was the exercises on page 74 and the more thought provoking questions on page 75 that required a more lengthy answer. The question, "What does this mean to you" requires that the student really think about what response is being asked for. I would like for the next time that the students put more effort into answering those questions. Not everyone had done that part of the homework. I thought that it would make for an interesting discussion in class, but with some students not able to participate in the discussion for lack of preparation, the discussion fell flat. I had also assigned that each student go to the Jewish Virtual Library and look up the Gates of Jerusalem. We had started to discuss them in the last class. I asked that each student choose two of the eight gates and write a few sentences about them. Again, not everyone completed this part of the assignment. We did wind up discussing some of the gates, but not all. This is an important part of Jewish history as the wall defends the old part of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. The Western Wall (or the Kotel) is the only remaining piece of the original temple. This is a significant part of Jewish history, culture and identity. I would like for the students to review the gates on that website and learn more about them.

In order to pick up some speed before the year‚s end, we covered two stories in class today. We will have a test next week (the last one of the year) and it will cover the last few stories we have gone over and the information about the Jerusalem gates.

For homework:

1. Please do the exercises on pages 78, 79 and 82.

2. Review the information given about the Gates of Jerusalem on the Jewish Virtual Library website:

The information on that website will be the source for some questions for the test next week.

Have a good week.

Enrichment:
Parents: Direct students to www.behrmanhouse.com where they can practice their Hebrew decoding
with “Click and Read Hebrew at Home” (the orange button) and drill prayer reading with “Click and Learn Prayer at Home” (the hot pink button). It’s also an ideal way for parents to practice along with their children.
