History/Philosophy - Nancy Garfinkel

This week we had an interesting discussion.  We started Chapter 6 in the textbook, which deals with the beginnings of Conservative Judaism, Solomon Schechter and has a brief discussion on anti-Semitism and discrimination.

That last part introduced a lively discussion of prejudice, and how Jews were discriminated against.  This also brought up the Civil Rights movement of the mid 20th century and how Jews were active in helping to achieve equal rights for African Americans.  Jews can certainly relate to how African Americans have been discriminated against, as we have experienced the same or similar situations throughout our history.  Both students had interesting insights to add to the discussion.  I enjoyed the class very much this week and hope that they did as well.

For homework:
Answer the following questions:
What is a "Genizah"?  Does the RJC have one?  Where is it located?  What is the Cairo Genizah and why is it important?

Go to http://www.ajc.org  and look up the AJC mission.  What is its mission?  (a mission is an operation designed to carry out the goals of a specific program or is the business with which a group is charged or instructed to do.)  What does this mission mean to you?  How would this mission apply in 1906 - when the AJC was started - how would this apply today?  Is it much different from 1906?

Go to http://www.ajcongress.org and look up the AJ Congress mission.  Is it very different from the AJC mission?  How?

Have a good weekend.  I look forward to Tuesday's discussion of the homework.

Mrs. Garfinkel

Enrichment:
Parents: Direct students to www.behrmanhouse.com where they can practice their Hebrew decoding
with “Click and Read Hebrew at Home” (the orange button) and drill prayer reading with “Click and Learn Prayer at Home” (the hot pink button). It’s also an ideal way for parents to practice along with their children.
