Hebrew - Rabbi Weber

Class this past Tuesday was a bit different, taking place at my house. Kids seemed to enjoy having a lawn to play on during their break time. We actually got quite a bit done.

As we missed two weeks for Pesach, and one week for school vacation, we has some catching up to do. Everyone shared what he or she did on Pesach.

We started chapter 5 of their text book, which is about the prayer "mi kamocha." (Technically, for liturgy buffs, it is part of the extended "ge'ulah"--redemption--prayer which forms the bridge between the shema and its associated brachot and the tefillah.

HW:
1. In the textbook, complete all the written exercises on pages 43, 44 and 45

2. On page 45 of the textbook, there is a brief section called "An Ethical Echo." It is about the mitzvah of Pidyon Shevuyim. Assignment: Write a short paragraph in which you give an example of a "captive." What would it mean to "redeem" a captive? This one will need parental help.

3. In the WORKBOOK please do pages 28, 29 and 30.

I will be away all next week, first attending the Rabbinical Assembly convention in Boston and then travelling to NYC for the honorary doctorate ceremony. Students will have one of our highly qualified substitutes.

By next Tuesday we do not expect the classrooms or big room cleaned yet. Most activities will be upstairs, with kitah bet in the fireplace room, kitah vav in the room with the windows off of the sanctuary and kitah aleph (K/1 with Mrs. McCarthy and Samantha) in the Lash Lounge, all of which have been cleaned up.

Shabbat Shalom

History/Bible - Tom Cohen for Nancy Garfinkel

Hi everyone,

First and foremost, you all should be very proud of the each and every childs' performance yesterday. Each child has learned from Mrs. Garfinkel how to evaluate a question, and then answer it with some profound idea. We all owe Nancy and Rabbi Weber our sincere thanks for teaching the children how to think in this way. As a parent of a sixteen year old, I can't begin to tell you how important this basic training in morals will help when presented with the many problems coming their way.

In class, we discussed the biblical story of the relationship between King Saul, and David. At the time, David was a good friend of King Saul's son Jonathan. The discussion surrounding the story focuses on friendship and loyalty.

Next week the cildren are going to have a test. It will cover page 44 - 69 in the book covering the bible stories. The kids will know the book. This covers the stories of Samuel, Saul, David, and Jonathan. If the kids review the answers in the workbook, they should do fine.

Have a great week,

Tom Cohen

Enrichment:
Parents: Direct students to www.behrmanhouse.com where they can practice their Hebrew decoding
with “Click and Read Hebrew at Home” (the orange button) and drill prayer reading with “Click and Learn Prayer at Home” (the hot pink button). It’s also an ideal way for parents to practice along with their children.
