Hebrew - Rabbi Weber

As Rabbi Weber is in the midst of Pesach preparations, and there will be no class for a few weeks due to Pesach and then Rutland city school break, this section will be updated soon.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday we had a change from the usual for class.  Instead of the routine reviewing homework and then discussion from a topic in the text,we had a craft project.

The craft project was to create a pillowcover for the pillows that we recline on during the Passover Seder.  The act of reclining as we dine is one of the symbols of our freedom as a people.

Rabbi and I made a list of words and concepts on the whiteboard that relate to Passover and the redemption of the Jewish people from our bondage in Egypt.   They were written in both English and Hebrew.  It gave the students a chance to practice reading and writing their Hebrew.  These words and phrases were the fodder for the design ideas for the pillowcases.

We then had the students draw out their designs on scrap paper.  After looking over the designs (checking for spelling and appropriate topics) each student was given a pillowcase and access to fabric paints and then were let run loose.

The designs that the kids came up with were as varied as each kid themselves.  They were very creative in their use of color and choice of topics to be commemorated on the pillowcase.

The designs should all be dry by now.  You can pick up the pillowcases from the RJC any time during office hours.  The pillowcases will either be on tables in the Mintzer Hall or in the classrooms.   They can be machine washed, just turn inside out before washing.  Hang to dry.

Each student put their name and the date on the pillowcase.  I hope that they will enjoy using them for many years of Passover Seders.

I managed to get photos of some of the pillowcases.  Some students took their work home with them directly after class as their paint had dried very quickly.  I would love to have everyone bring their pillows and cases with them for the Community Seder next week so that we can get a group photo that will show off their talents.

I hope that everyone enjoyed this project.  I look forward to finding other fun art and craft projects to share with the classes.

Have a Zessen Pesach and I will see you all at either the Community Seder or the first class in May.  ( I will be away on April 24th - please contact Rabbi if any of you parents are able to fill in for me - Thanks)

Mrs. Garfinkel

Enrichment:
Parents: Direct students to www.behrmanhouse.com where they can practice their Hebrew decoding
with “Click and Read Hebrew at Home” (the orange button) and drill prayer reading with “Click and Learn Prayer at Home” (the hot pink button). It’s also an ideal way for parents to practice along with their children.
