Hebrew - Rabbi Weber

This week we finished up our excursis into the Jewish calendar, the names of the months and the like. Although a little light on Hebrew, I think it was worth it.

HW:

1. Read and complete page 42 of the book. This is very simple, but it deals with an important concept, the "yetzer," or "inclination." We have two: a "yetzer ha-tov" and a "yetzer ha-rah." Even the most saintly person has a "yetzer ha-rah," such people simply have learned to control it.

2. Write a paragraph in English answering the following question: "What advantage(s) are there in having a "yetzer ha-rah?" What would people be like if we didn't have that aspect to our selves?"

This Shabbat is Jr. Congregation.

Please note that we have only 10 more sessions left for the whole year as we only meet one time in April, due to the first and last days of Pesach and one week off for secular school vacation.

The one session scheduled in April, (April 24) Mrs. Garfinkel will be in Florida. We will need a substitute teacher for that day. Can any of you fill in, just for the one day?

Rabbi Doug Weber

History/Philosophy - Nancy Garfinkel

Class summary:

Today we reviewed the homework of word definitions I had assigned last week. Due to my being very under the weather, I was not up to the usual level of talking, conversation and explanation. I prepared a word search puzzle for the students to do.

The topic for this puzzle is 20th century Jewish Boxers. There is just a brief mention of famous boxers in Chapter 5 of the text book and I found that intriguing. Most everyone has heard of Max Baer, the heavyweight boxing champion (who was coincidentally the father of Max Baer Jr., who is well known for having played the role of Jethro Bodine on the 60's tv show, The Beverly Hillbillies), but unless you are a really devoted boxing fan, you may have not heard the names of those I found for the puzzle. For their time, these men made good money and earned a proud name for themselves in the world of boxers. Many had interesting (and some not very Jewish sounding) nicknames. I found this to be an interesting tidbit and hope that it opens up more interest in finding out about other Jewish sports people.

For homework:

Please complete the puzzle. Hopefully next week I will have my voice back and we will be able to a full discussion of the rest of the chapter.

Have a great weekend.
Mrs. Garfinkel

Enrichment:
Parents: Direct students to www.behrmanhouse.com where they can practice their Hebrew decoding
with “Click and Read Hebrew at Home” (the orange button) and drill prayer reading with “Click and Learn Prayer at Home” (the hot pink button). It’s also an ideal way for parents to practice along with their children.
