Hebrew - Rabbi Weber

We have been continuing our excursis into the why's and how's of the Jewish calendar. Both kids did reasonably well on the quiz I gave on Tuesday. Its a bit challenging to teach this stuff in Hebrew School at this age as kids having gotten a lot of science in their regular schools yet, so basic facts such as "the moon revolves around the earth in about 29 1/2 days," or that the moon waxes and wanes aren't real solid. Blame "No Child Left Behind" a bit, as our public schools now concentrate so
much on reading and math achievement so as not to loose funding that they almost completely ignore science.

Homework is entirely on the worksheets I gave. In case you do not have a Jewish calendar at home, I gave both kids one I had hanging around. They are to go through the calendar and list on the worksheet, which Jewish holiday occur in each of the Hebrew months.

I would prefer if kids wrote the names of the holidays in Hebrew, but if they don't know how, or if the calendar doesn't have it, they can write it in English.

This past Tuesday, I spent some time teaching about the climate of Israel and how some of our holidays are related to it. In particular, that Sukkot marks the beginning of the planting season and that Passover and Shavuot are connected to the important grain harvests.

Purim is Sat. night. Starts with Havdallah and dairy pot-luck. Wear a costume! Come prepared to tell a joke or funny bit in between chapters of the Megillah.

History/Philosophy - Nancy Garfinkel

Hi Everyone,

Today in class, due to popular demand, we played "History Wheel of Fortune" a takeoff on the very popular with the Bet class "Prophets Wheel of Fortune".  Our contestants had to solve a rather lengthy puzzle and then answer the question that was attached to it.  Both of our contestants participated with gusto and were awarded a small prize for their efforts today.

For homework:
Please complete the word search puzzles that I gave you.  I also would like you to write a sentence or two defining, identifying or explaining the following words:
Galician,  Moses Isserles, Cossacks,  Israel Ha-Cohen,  The May Laws,  Pogroms,  The Pale of Settlement,  Tsar Alexander,  Sholem Aleichem and Ellis Island.

Thanks for a good class today, I hope to see you at the Purim Party on Saturday (in costume!)
Mrs. Garfinkel

Enrichment:
Parents: Direct students to www.behrmanhouse.com where they can practice their Hebrew decoding
with “Click and Read Hebrew at Home” (the orange button) and drill prayer reading with “Click and Learn Prayer at Home” (the hot pink button). It’s also an ideal way for parents to practice along with their children.
