Hebrew - Rabbi Weber

On Tuesday, Feb 13 both students were absent; a first! Thus, there is no new Hebrew HW. However, since both students are skilled internet users, please do the following.

Do a web search or, (how gloriously old-fashioned!) use a reference book, or better still, a Bible, and answer the following questions.

1. The story of Purim is found in the Book of Esther. In what part of the Bible is the Book of Esther found?
2. What was Esther's Hebrew name?
3. What was the name of Esther's uncle, (some versions say "cousin")?
4. What was the name of the King?
5. Who was the man who plotted to kill the King and who discovered the plot?
6. Who was Queen before Esther? Why was she deposed? (That is, why did the King fire her from her job and have her replaced?)
7. The villain of the story suggests to the King that he kill all the Jews. What reason does he give for wanting to kill all the Jews?
8. What happens to the villain of the story?
9. What act of courage did Queen Esther perform?

We are about to have a one week break for Presidents' Day week.

By the way, did you know that George Washington went out of his way to write a letter to the Jewish community of Newport, Rhode Island?  In that letter, he promised the small Jewish population of the new United States of America that there would be no discrimination in this country based on religion. In those days there were very few Jews in the whole country, probably less than 8,000 people, but President Washington thought it was important to assure the Jews of the new country that they would be safe here.

President Abraham Lincoln also went out of his way to help Jews. During the Civil War, when Lincoln was very busy directing the war, he heard that a certain General in the Union Army was discriminating against Jews and issued a public reprimand against that General.

As you enjoy your week off from secular school and Hebrew school, take a minute to think about all the freedom we have in this country. Both of these Presidents, who's birthday occur this month, (Lincoln on Feb. 12 and Washington on the 22nd,) were good friends to the Jewish people of America.

No Junior Congregation this week.

Start thinking about a Purim costume. We will celebrate Purim on Saturday night, March 3.

Enrichment:
Parents: Direct students to www.behrmanhouse.com where they can practice their Hebrew decoding
with “Click and Read Hebrew at Home” (the orange button) and drill prayer reading with “Click and Learn Prayer at Home” (the hot pink button). It’s also an ideal way for parents to practice along with their children.
