Hebrew - Rabbi Weber

On Tuesday we had the announced test on all of chapter 3. I was very pleased by the results of the class as a whole. Everyone showed that he or she basically understands the Shema, its response, when they are said and why. Everyone also demonstrated a good understanding of the concept of having a "shem tov." A few students did not know who Adolph Hitler or
Saddaam Hussein were, (two historical examples of people who did not have a "shem tov"). They were not penalized for not knowing who these men were.

One person got every single answer correct, including the bonus. That student got an A+. One student came close, and got an A. There were two A-, one B+, and two B- grades. Noah came late and will do his test at home.

HW for next week is to study the six vocabulary words on page 35, as we are about to start a new chapter on the prayer after the Shema, which we call by its first word, "v'ahavta." There will be a simple quiz on these words next week. Make some flashcards, write them out in a list and you will do fine.

Friday night is our Tu BiShvat Seder and pot-luck dinner. It will be fun, especially if everyone comes. Call the office on Wednesday if you want to attend.

History/Bible - Nancy Garfinkel

Hi Everyone,

This week we went over the chapter, "Samuel, Leader of Israel". Everyone was prepared with their homework and all were able to participate in giving answers to questions about the chapter. We discussed four other questions in particular to tie together different concepts from this story to other stories we have read in class and other bible stories not necessarily covered in this class.

The questions that we discussed were:

Samuel prays for God's help in fighting the Philistines. Who else made a point of praying to God for help in battle? Joshua (asking the sun to stand still), & Gideon (God told him which soldiers to take into battle)

In what other story does God wash away the enemies of the Israelites? Passover - the Exodus from Egypt

Who else fought against idol worship? Gideon, Abraham & Moses

By listening to God, Samuel becomes a priest, a prophet and a judge. Name at least three other people who listened to what God had to tell them. Joshua, Gideon, Samson's mother, Hannah - Samuel's mother, Moses and Abraham.

Everyone helped with the answers to these questions and all deserve credit for doing such a good job tying these concepts together.

We did have time for two quick rounds of prophets wheel of fortune. Josh again did a great job of solving the puzzles (with a little help from the peanut gallery!).

Because everyone did so well and all had done their homework for this past week, I am not assigning any homework this week as a small reward. I look forward to seeing everyone next tuesday for class.

Have a good week,
Mrs. Garfinkel

Enrichment:
Parents: Direct students to www.behrmanhouse.com where they can practice their Hebrew decoding
with “Click and Read Hebrew at Home” (the orange button) and drill prayer reading with “Click and Learn Prayer at Home” (the hot pink button). It’s also an ideal way for parents to practice along with their children.
