Rabbi’s surgery this past Monday went well. He is recovering nicely but will probably be out until August 21. In case of emergency, he may be reached on his cell phone: (802) 779-3613. Thank you in advance to the members of the Ritual Committee who will lead Shabbat Services while Rabbi is on the mend.

YAHRZEITEN

We recall the lives of the following loved ones whose yahrzeiten fall this week and may be observed during Shabbat services: Louis Gold, Max Kantor, Sol Marmar, Hannah Munsat, Hersch Perlman, Max Steinberg, Eugene Wasserman and Bernard Woolwitch.

SERVICES

Shabbat Services: Friday, August 15 at 8:00 p.m. led by members of the Ritual Committee.

Shabbat Services: Friday, August 22 at 8:00 p.m. Leslie & Steve Brenner will host the oneg in memory of Sidney Wasserman and Ralph Brenner.

Shabbat Services: Saturday, August 23 at 9:30 a.m.

Shabbat Services: Friday, August 29 at 6:00 p.m. in an informal, family style followed by light refreshments for one and all in celebration of Ari Schneider’s Bar Mitzvah. A private Shabbat dinner for the Schneider’s out-of-town guests will follow.

Shabbat Services and Ari Schneider’s Bar Mitzvah Celebration: Saturday, August 30 at 9:30 a.m. Carolyn Devlin & David Schneider have invited all members to the kiddush luncheon.

EDUCATION

Hebrew School begins Tuesday, September 2.

High School Groups will meet for the first time on Sunday, September 7.

MEETINGS

COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Deli Supper has been postponed due to multiple scheduling conflicts.

Ari Schneider’s Bar Mitzvah celebration will be on Friday & Saturday, August 29 & 30. All congregants are invited to the light oneg following Friday evening’s 6:00 p.m. Service. All members have been invited to the kiddush following Saturday morning’s 9:30 a.m. services.

LIGHT OF HONOR

The entry foyer light, which lights the Star of David, is designated the Light of Honor. Members and friends are invited to sponsor leaving this light on in honor of or in memory of a person or an event for a contribution of $18 per honor, per week. Please phone, mail or e-mail your requests so that we may accommodate your preferred dates. Please make your check payable to ‘RJC Light of Honor’. We also accept Visa & MasterCard.

TREE OF LIFE

The Tree of Life, which is for simchot and in honor of the living, is a way to remember significant events involving members and their families. For a contribution of $100, you may have a leaf engraved with names, dates and simchot. If you wish to sponsor an honor, please contact the RJC office at 773-3455 or office@rutlandjewishcenter.org

Sisterhood is sponsoring a leaf on the Tree of Life in honor of the Bar Mitzvah Celebration of Ari Joseph Schneider.

Sukkot begins on October 13 this year and it’s hard to think of a better way of celebrating it than with an etrog and lulav from Israel. United Synagogue offers a choice of four sets; each includes an etrog, an etrog box, a lulav, hdasim, aravot, a holder a bag and rings. $45 for ‘First Class’ set; $55 for ‘Prime Quality’ set; $35 for ‘Standard’ set; $29 for ‘Chinuch’ set. You may order through uscj.org or through the RJC. We accept Visa and MasterCard. Deadline for ordering is October 3.

The Holocaust Museum’s traveling exhibition, “Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals: 1933-1945”, will be on public display at UVM’s Living/Learning Center Gallery on 633 Main Street in Burlington from August 18 until September 30. Through reproductions of 250 historic photographs the exhibit examines the rationale, means and impact of the Nazi regime’s attempt to eradicate homosexuality. Opening reception is on Thursday, August 21 from 6-8 p.m. If you’re interested in helping to sponsor this event contact Christopher Neff at Christopher@outrightvt.org Sponsorships ($250) include 4 tickets and listing in the event program. Sponsorship deadline is August 18.

Rabbi Bob Alper & Azhar Usman are bringing their ‘Laugh in Peace Tour’ to the Unitarian Universalist Church on West Street on Wednesday, August 20 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets in advance are available at Book King for $18. Tickets at door: $20; $15 Seniors and Students. Information: 802-775-0850. Adults and children 11 and over are welcome.
